Dr. Effie Ioannidou - DMD, MS

Biography Text: Dr. Ioannidou graduated from the School of Dentistry, Faculty of Health Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. She completed her advanced training in Periodontology and Masters in Dental Sciences at UCONN Health School of Dental Medicine. She received additional training in clinical research at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Ioanniodou is a Professor and Chair of Department of Orofacial Sciences at the University of California San Francisco. She played a leading role in founding the IADR Women in Science Network in 2011. She served as the Associate Editor of the JDR Clinical and Translational Research until June 2023. She is currently the AADOCR President (2024-2025). She served as a member of the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs and is currently the Executive Director of the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Oral Health Research. She is a AADOCR (2018) and AAAS (2022) Fellow. Since July 1st 2023, Dr. Ioannidou has been serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the two AAP Journals: Journal of Periodontology and the Clinical Advances in Periodontics. Dr. Effie Ioannidou is a clinician scientist with training in Periodontology. Her research addresses clinical and translational questions on the anti-inflammatory effect of periodontal interventions in systemic health as well as chronic kidney disease. She has recently led a multicenter team of investigators with the goal to explore the systemic antibiotic prescribing patterns in combination with periodontal therapy. Recently, she developed a new line of research focusing on the sex and gender intersection in oral inflammatory diseases. Dr. Ioannidou is very passionate about rigor and transparency in clinical research and a proponent of high-quality scientific reporting and clinical trial registration.
