Topic: Solving Grafting Problems in the Anterior Mandible with the Tunnel Technique

Although the tunnel technique is commonly used to treat recession in the maxillary arch, it is underutilized in the anterior mandible due to concerns regarding aberrant frenum involvement, vestibular depth, deep recession, and thin mucosa. This lecture will examine these concerns and illustrate technical modifications to overcome these limitations.

Educational Objectives:

  • Discuss the anatomic limitations for successful soft tissue grafting in the anterior mandible
  • Describe the technique modifications for management of site variables in the anterior mandible
  • List 5 advantages of the Tunnel Technique vs the Flap Technique for root coverage grafting
  • Michael K. McGuire

Topic: 30+ Years in Search of Alternatives to Autogenous Tissue

This course examines the presenter’s quest to find suitable alternatives to autogenous tissue for grafting periodontal defects. A variety of options will be presented along with a decision support system to help clinicians make choices on which alternatives are appropriate.

    Educational Objectives:

  • How will alternatives likely be chosen?
  • How can we use an evidence-based approach and real-world evidence to help in our selection of alternatives?
  • Which features are important in an alternative and do those attributes change based on who is evaluating them? Periodontist, General Practitioner, Patient.

Topic: The autogenous connective tissue graft from the hard palate: donor sites, harvesting techniques and their clinical consequences.

Over the last 40 years, the autogenous connective tissue graft from the hard palate has been the gold standard for esthetic soft tissue volume augmentation in the oral cavity. The aim of this presentation will be to discuss the clinical consequences of using connective tissue grafts with different tissue compositions from different donor regions of the palate, and shed light on their possible impact on treatment outcomes.

    Educational Objectives:

  • Learning to identify promising donor sites and how to perform safe harvesting techniques for autogenous connective tissue grafts in the hard palate.
  • Learning how connective tissue grafts with different tissue compositions can influence revascularization, epithelialization and volume stability of the reconstructed region.
  • Learning case-by-case, how to select donor sites and how to perform harvesting techniques for autogenous connective tissue grafts depending on clinical baseline situations and patient expectations.
