Description

Complications associated with the placement, restoration, and mainte-nance of dental implants are among the hottest topics in clinical practice today. As an organization committed to staying at the forefront of innovation, the American Academy of Periodontology, in collaboration with the Academy of Osseointegration, hosted a consensus conference to ad-dress these critical issues.

Held in August at Oakbrook Hills, Illinois, the meeting brought together 46 expert representatives from periodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, and general dentistry to deliberate on a variety of topics concerning dental implant care. Eight commissioned systematic reviews and meta-analyses formed the backbone of the conference, all of which under-went rigorous peer review and have been accepted for publication in both the Journal of Periodontology and the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants. These papers are slated for release in the June 2025 editions.

Where scientific evidence was lacking in providing definitive clinical guidelines, expert opinions were used to bridge the gaps. What were the key findings from the deliberations, discussions, and debates at this landmark conference? To discover what's in store for the future, you won't want to miss the must-see opening session, where more details will be revealed in June. The objectives include just three of the many important highlights from the conference.

Educational Objectives

  • • Explore the emerging risks for peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis identified during the conference.
  • • Discuss prosthetic designs that may help minimize the risk of peri-implantitis development.
  • • Compare and contrast the different methods of dental implant sur-face decontamination as well as the treatment.
