Description

Implant therapy has enhanced treatment options for patients and improved our ability to provide optimal care. Initial studies implied that implants were impervious to peri-implant diseases. However, current data suggests that this may be more common than originally thought. Avoiding complications and identifying risks associated with peri-implant disease is critical in maintaining long term implant health. This course will address some of those factors which may contribute to peri-implant diseases and review how to avoid or manage those situations.

Educational Objectives

• Discuss those factors that are in the therapist’s control to limit peri-implant diseases.
• Discuss the optimal dimension of peri-implant mucosa necessary to prevent molar implants from peri-implant diseases and the criteria for selecting the appropriate technique for managing second stage exposure surgery.
• Identify current concepts in implant position compatible with peri-implant tissue health and assess strategies for maximizing peri-implant tissue stability.
• Understand the interactions between biological peri-implant environment, oral bacteria and biomaterial that lead to titanium release and how to maintain implants without releasing titanium particles.
