Complications associated with the placement, restoration, and maintenance of dental im-plants are among the hottest topics in clinical practice today. As an organization commit-ted to staying at the forefront of innovation, the American Academy of Periodontology, in collaboration with the Academy of Osseointegration, hosted a consensus conference to address these critical issues.
Held in August at Oak Brook, Illinois, the meeting brought together 46 expert represent-atives from periodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, and general dentistry to deliberate on a variety of topics concerning dental implant care. Eight commissioned systematic reviews and meta-analyses formed the backbone of the conference, all of which under-went rigorous peer review and have been accepted for publication in the Journal of Peri-odontology and the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants. These papers are slated for publication in June 2025.
Expert opinions were used to bridge the gaps where scientific evidence is lacking in providing definitive clinical guidelines. What were the key findings from the deliberations, discussions, and debates at this landmark conference? To discover what’s in store for the future, you won’t want to miss this must-see opening session.
· Explore the emerging risks for peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis identified during the conference.
· Discuss prosthetic designs that may help minimize the risk of peri-implantitis de-velopment.
· Compare and contrast different methods of dental implant surface decontamina-tion as well as treatments.
